Yunlin Government teamed up with Taiwan Good Coffee and WiAdvance Technology 

to set up a smart agricultural production line

In 1941, Gukeng Coffee was designated as "Emperor Coffee" by the Japanese royal family, and it was in demand for a while. But after World War II, many coffee fields were abandoned or converted to other uses. It was not until 2003 that the coffee festival held in Yunlin re-launched the name of Gukeng. However, after the coffee bean mixing incident that broke out in 2014, consumer confidence was seriously reduced, resulting in unsalable coffee beans and heavy losses.

Solutions

Yunlin County is the largest agricultural county in Taiwan. However, it also faces problems such as aging agriculture, the unwillingness of young people to invest, and a lack of transparency in the production line. To change the status quo and recreate the grand occasion of Gukeng coffee, the Yunlin County Government sought out Xu Yihong, a local who is willing to dedicate himself to the change. Through the Taiwan Smart City Program of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Yunlin Government teamed up with Taiwan Good Coffee(TGC) and Wiadvance to set up a Smart Agricultural production line.

1st Phase: Field Management Optimization

Issue
The growing environment of coffee beans and the way of arranging branches have a great impact on coffee beans. Based on TGC's years of experience, field management will seriously affect the quality of coffee beans. However, the temperature and humidity data were recorded by hand. It was difficult and ineffective to track the status of the deeded coffee fields.
Solution:
  • Field monitoring: Field microclimate detectors detect the microclimate data, including daily changes in temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind power, sunshine, etc., and upload all the collected data to the cloud, allowing managers to keep abreast of where smallholders can improve.
  • Management of dispatched workers: Assist managers to remind small farmers and improve their land control through action orientation. Through the arrangement of the planting database, it is convenient for small farmers to click through the APP to record production varieties, planting and other data, reducing contract work. Paper-based operations for smallholder farmers and improve green bean quality and productivity.
Through collecting data, we can maintain the flavour of coffee every year. The consumers can also get the traceability of the product straightforwardly. When more and more data is collected, it is more likely to predict the harvest volume of agricultural products and the possible diseases and insect pests in the future for early response.

2nd Phase: Coffee Flavor Management

Issue
In the past, records were done manually. It took a lot of time to sort out the green beans every day, and it was impossible to effectively analyze the quality of the green beans of the suppliers, which caused the burden on the manager.
Solution:
  • Warehouse management system: by scanning the QR Code on the coffee bag through the APP, we can know who is the farmer in charge of the bean, when is the bean restocked, and what is the best baking time for the bean.
  • AI detection of coffee beans: The APP could measure the percentage of yield loss of coffee beans by AI recognition. By implementing AI recognition, we can calculate the production capacity and the data can be used as a reference for supplier management.
  • Production Management: According to the data we collected in the previous process, the system will remind the roaster what is the best roasting time for the batch of coffee beans. The monitoring center will also generate production forecasts, warnings, and quality analyses.
  • The Best Parametric Curve of Roasting Coffee: We collected all the data such as the variety of coffee beans, temperature and time baked by each machine, etc. These data helped us generate a diagram to stabilize the taste of coffee. By following the Parametric Curve, every roaster can control coffee to have the same flavor.

3rd Phase: production and sales management

Issue:
The sales information isn't transparent enough for the manager. Since the data was collected on paper, it was difficult for managers to analyze and propose improvement suggestions.
Solution:
After the processing and selling data is collected, a visual chart can be generated through the system and build a war room. With all these data, managers can quickly understand the planting, processing and selling status, which is convenient for managers to make suggestions for operation management and process optimization.
